 Class Descriptions

Covenant Ballet Academy has been training dancers since 1987 and is a proud user of the ABT® National Training Curriculum for its ballet program. The ABT curriculum combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development which complements Covenant Ballet’s goals. 

 EARLY STEPS PROGRAM               

 BALLET CLASSES

CREATIVE MOVEMENT (3 years)

45 minutes of fun, introducing simple exercises and creative games to build coordination, stretch, musicality and strength. 

PRE-BALLET (4 years)

45 minutes of fun, introducing basic ballet positions and movement through simple exercises and creative games to build coordination, stretch, musicality and strength. Ballet stories introduced.

 

PRIMARY 1 (5 years)

45 minutes of fun, building on the basic ballet positions and movement for coordination, stretch, musicality and strength.

 

PRIMARY 2 (6 years)

45 minutes of fun, building on the basic ballet positions with greater demand for focus. Continued development of coordination, stretch, musicality and strength.

PRIMARY 3 (7 years)

60 minutes of fun, preparing them for the beginner ballet curriculum demanding and developing more stamina and focus. 

 

 STUDENT PROGRAM

 BALLET CLASSES        

GARNET, 2 year program (8 years and up)

2 classes per week

Year 1: Teaching the fundamentals of the ballet technique (as per the ABT® National Curriculum).

 

Year 2: Building on the  fundamentals of the ballet technique (as per the ABT® National Curriculum).

 

SAPPHIRE, 2 year program minimum (10 years and up) 3 classes per week

Year 1: Moving beyond the fundamentals with increased ballet vocabulary.

 

Year 2: Seeking mastery of the fundamentals with continued increase of ballet vocabulary.  Girls evaluated and prepared for pointe shoes. 

AMETHYST, 2 year program minimum (11 years and up) 3 classes per week

Moving beyond the fundamentals. As per the ABT® National Curriculum but with greater emphasis on Vaganova technique.  Pointe work for approved girls. 

 

EMERALD, 1 year program minimum

(13 years and up) 4 classes per week

Elementary ballet with greater emphasis on artistry and epaulement.  Pointe work. 

 

LAPIS, 1 year program minimum

(13 years and up) 5 classes per week

Intermediate ballet vocabulary.  Pointe and Variations work. 

ONYX, 1 year program minimum

(14 years and up) 6 classes per week

Advanced ballet vocabulary.  Pointe and Variations work. 

 STUDENT PROGRAM

 MODERN CLASSES   

HORTON BASED MODERN 1

(7.5 years and up)

An elementary introduction to the structures and shapes found within Lester Horton technique. The students will learn how to achieve these shapes in predictable sequence, and have time to explore dynamic movement and rhythm through creative and varied choreography.

 

HORTON BASED MODERN 2

(pre-requisite Level 1)

Building on the structures established in Modern 1, and continues to challenge the students with increased athleticism and longer phrases of varied choreography.

 

HORTON BASED MODERN 3/4

(pre-requisite Level 2)

Expanding on the structure & techinique established in Modern 2, and continue to challenge the students with increased athleticism and longer phrases of varied choreography.

 

CONTEMPORARY 1

(ages 7.5 years and up)
This class introduces modern to younger students with a creative and enjoyable approach while learning fundamentals of contemporary dance technique.

CONTEMPORARY 2

(pre-requisite Level 1)
This class builds upon skills gained in Modern 1, developing technique through floor and center work, and moving into choreographed sequences. The class also uses improvisation develops a choreographic voice to hone performance skills.

CONTEMPORARY 3/4

(pre-requisite Level 2)
Based in Release and Limon technique, this advanced level class challenges students to take their previous knowledge of technique and develop a sense of artistry through movement. The class continues to explore approaches to choreography and improvisation.
